Adrian - Part 1 (9-11 months)

Adrian is growing so fast that I figured a couple months back that I should start keeping track of his growth and progress as these little things get easily forgotten months or years from now. For those of you who are interested, I hope you'll enjoy this little bit of insight into his life.

9 months

In Poland – 2nd of August

9 months old

Adrian has his 7th and 8th teeth coming in now. He’s been a bit extra fussy, wanting to be carried but then once he’s up, wanting to go down or touch something out of reach. He’s eating bananas, veggie mush, sometimes yogurt (if it’s extra creamy), bits of cracker, bites of watermelon, tomato. At home he ate plenty of papaya and chayote which are his favorites along with some platano. He doesn’t eat lots unless he’s really hungry and I’m not home.

Yesterday Adrian came shopping with me to Tesco. After a while he got tired of looking at all the items of food and wanted to walk around. He ate raisins and chewed on a tic-tac box which I in turn bought because he chewed off the top sticker.

Today he held a banana in his hand and ate it. Such a big boy! He’s learning to say “please” by clapping his hands, but hasn’t quite gotten it yet, but will any day now I think. He likes the Kubus carrot drink that we drink at Babcia’s (pronounced Babcha, means grandma in Polish). He doesn’t like to sit in his highchair or stroller when first put in, but usually is happy after the first few seconds.

He loves bath time and no matter how tired and grumpy will be happy in his bath. Coming to Poland changed his sleeping schedule and the first night he only went to sleep at 3am (which was 10am for his poor body clock) but each day since then he’s gone to sleep an hour or more earlier and last night he went to sleep at 9. Yay!

9 ½ months – 8th August 2008

Adrian is real good at pointing now (which he learned in his 8th month). He loves the fish tank Babcia has and quickly will point to fish, dogs and da-da when you ask him to point them out to you. Just yesterday he started raising his hands in response to mama saying “Hallelujah!”. He does it over and over waiting for mommy to say Hallelujah. This morning he ate his first big meal of raw apple which Babcia fed him scraping it out with a spoon. So yummy! He ate 2/3rds of a big apple. Yesterday he also ate a whole plum on his own and likes pieces of grape too.

The other night he woke up crying as something was hurting him. We at first thought he twisted his arm in his sleep, but in the end we realized it must have been a tummy ache, gas or something. We were quite worried about what might be wrong, but as we prayed and claimed the keys he was able to calm down after about 10 minutes. It’s very unusual for him to refuse nursing because he’s crying, so it got me worried, but after he actually woke up (as opposed to crying in his sleep) he started to nurse and went back to sleep even through a lot of sniffling and a few cries still. Jesus takes care of his own..

Yesterday (8th of August) he went for his first walk with Babcia and they were out for 3 ½ hours. He’s good at opening cupboard doors and drawers now and loves to explore certain of Babcia’s cupboards.

10 months and 7 days – 26th August

Firsts:

- Yesterday Adrian climbed stairs for the first time on his own. I put him down while I put away the stroller and he crawled to the steps and climbed 6 steps before someone came walking down them and he got shy.

Walking

- Babcia also said he took 4 unassisted steps for the first time yesterday, and then today at the park he took a few steps for mommy on the grass and he was so excited and proud of himself.

- A week ago I asked him in my usual fashion to say “please” for something he wanted and he clapped his hands! Babcia, Kevin and I all cheered for him. So, he’s now able to say please, by clapping his hands if not too desperate for something.

- He can also climb up on a bed if it’s not too high.

- He’s also learned to give. When I ask Adrian for something he knows how to give it to me.

Adrian got sick for the first time last week. He was vomiting his meals and had the runs and a high fever. I was so worried, but Jesus healed him after only 1 ½ days being sick. He may have eaten a tiny piece of some wild mushroom while we were out in the country over the weekend. We gave him two fever reducers during the day and in the night he had a high fever, but slept soundly so we prayed him through the night. In the morning his temperature dropped to 38 and by noon he was cool as a cucumber and I was elated!

At the park

Yesterday while out on a shopping trip to Biedronka, we stopped at a sandbox to play. While there, he saw and touched a hamster for the first time and was so excited. On the way home he was playing and sucking on the end piece of Babcia’s Calcium container. Only when we were almost home did he gag a bit and I quickly took him out of the stroller and tilted him upside down. He spat a little something out and then I realized that there were some little beads in the cap that he’d popped open and obviously got a few in his mouth. I got so scared as I figured they were poisonous. I ran home shaking and thankfully Daddy was still home. We prayed for him and he was fine. Thank the Lord! I’ve been learning to be very cautious about what little Adrian plays with especially when he gets really quiet – as that’s usually when he’d doing something that he shouldn’t.

We discovered that Adrian loves to eat crackers while in the airport on the way to Poland. A cracker will keep him occupied for several minutes in the stroller while mommy is in the shop or some other such potentially perplexing situation for little Adrian.  He also likes spooned apple and pear.

Recently baths have been a little traumatic as Adrian rubs his eyes and puts soap into them by doing so. Then he gets scared and cries and mommy has to pour water on his face to get the soap out which scares him even more. Poor little guy.

Looking at the nice lady in the bus

He’s very warm with strangers now and only takes a very short while to get friendly and begin playing and laughing with them. It's especially cute when on a bus, he'll instinctively see who's sitting behind us and start playing games with whomever will smile at him. Once, there was a stern looking man standing behind us and Adrian started trying to play peek-a-boo with him. He wasn't met with much success then as I don't think the man noticed him. He forsure doesn't judge by outward appearance and gives his friendliness to anyone.

Yesterday with Daddy he ate his first whole banana for breakfast and did so again this morning. After his little sickness he was gagging at eating any particles, but now is able to eat normally again.

He’s quite good at obeying when told no, and if it’s too much temptation for him, he doesn’t usually scream when taken away from the forbidden object.

He’s faithful to go pee on the potty after each nap, and mommy keeps telling herself to put him on the potty more throughout the day to more fully potty train the little champ.

He’s now gotten the victory over sitting in his highchair and doesn’t put up a fuss when it’s time to go in.

Yummy yogurt

Games:

- Still loves peekaboo in any shape or form (started playing on his own at 5 months I think). He loves songs and will now clap during a song or move his arm in his own rhythm up and down.

- Babcia got him a spinning top and he’s learning how to pump the little handle so that it spins.

He loves watching the ducks at the pond and thoroughly enjoys going to the park to meet and play with other kiddos. Yesterday we went out in the late afternoon to the little play area in front of the apartment. We were sitting across from each other throwing his little football. A little girl of about 2 came and sat with us and Adrian did very well with “tossing” the ball to mommy or the little girl and was enthralled that we had company in our game. He’s very observant of other kids play and was watching intently some very rowdy boys pulling and playing on the slide yesterday.

10 ½ months old. 4th September 2008

Firsts: Yesterday I asked him to pick me a flower while in a field and he immediately bent over to point to the little yellow dandelion. I’ve talked to him about flowers before but I didn’t realize he actually learned what I’d taught him! Babcia got him for the first time pointing to the teddy and doggies noses in Polish. He’s very good at “saying please” now and will perform whenever asked.

Flower

He can bend over to pick something up while standing on his own with ease and he now frequently walks on his own, sometimes up to 15 steps at a time. At the park he LOVES going down the slide as well as swinging with mommy, though it makes mommy sea sick. He likes to play in sandboxes and play with the other kids sand toys. The other day a little boy let him play with his toy truck in the sand as well as a few other toys which were really cool.

At Richard and Agnieshka’s wedding a little 2 year old boy had a fancy race car that when placed on ground would make a revving sound like it was racing. Adrian got ahold of it and was enthralled with it and kept bending down to “vroom” the car as he knew if he pressed it against the ground it would make that cool sound.

The last few days he’s started hugging/hanging onto my neck when he’s desperate and I pick him up. He’s still very eager to communicate with people on any public transportation and will immediately start playing peekaboo with the person behind us, laughing, gabbing to them and making the person happy and smile.

Babcia got him a top to play with, one of those things you pump the little handle which makes it spin. Adrian learned that if he picks it up by the handle and turns it upside down he can watch it spin slowly down and he does that frequently when playing with it.

He’s eating a whole banana for breakfast almost every morning now and has added cottage cheese to his diet. He’s learning to share now and will often “offer” his plum, pear or whatever he’s eating to mommy for a bite to which mommy takes a bite and goes “mmmmm” which tickles him pink.

Yesterday Babcia gave us some funds to get Adrian some wooden puzzles and toys. We got the kind of puzzles with animals and little knobs and you have to place them into their place. Within a few minutes he learned how to pick them up by their little red knobs instead of trying to scratch them out. He’s also helpful in putting away his toys into the bucket or their place, although it’s more of mommy helping him do it than one of his joys in life. For every thing he puts away, he wants to get one out again. Ha!

He’s more and more obedient and no longer tries to play with cables or certain things we’ve taught him for quite a while are “off limits”.  He loves Kiddie Viddies and has at times happily sat still watching two in a row on his own while mommy would do cleaning around the apartment. Daddy captured them in Polish, so he now watches them in Polish too which will be a blessing to his learning Polish.

10 months and 3 weeks - 9th September

On the long trip back home to Guatemala Adrian behaved quite well. He watched a few hours worth of kiddie vidies, crawled from chair to chair smiling at people and played in the corridors gabbing to himself and entertaining those watching him. He hasn’t been eating barely any food since we left Poland, except when he gets to hold the spoon. He’s starting to want to feed himself.

He remembers everyone in our home, and went to Jazmin right away after arriving home from the airport. His schedule is getting back to normal one hour each day. The first day we went to sleep at 6 pm and woke at 3am, the next went to sleep at 3pm and woke up at 3am (although mommy was up at 1:30) and then yesterday we went to sleep at 4 pm and woke up at 3:30 am. So in a few days we should be back on normal schedule.

This morning Adrian had ½ an hour of reading books and doing his verses and loved it, he even fussed when I put down the book. He’s becoming a little too attached to video’s though. He taps the computer and then says please very diligently when he wants to watch something. So, we’re needing to be careful about how much he views. Yesterday morning he sat there for nearly 2 hours watching the same Kiddie Vidies and ABC video’s over again. He may have gotten used to too much TV watching while at Babcias when he’d watch some sweet cartoons every morning over breakfast.

Yesterday Adrian did his first errand! I asked him to pass me the yellow stacking cup that was out of my reach and sort of behind the chair he was sitting next to. He crawled to see what I was pointing at and talking about, he then crawled right to it, picked it up and passed it to me! Daddy was there to see it and we were overjoyed! He’s now very good at picking up the shapes and trying to put them in their slots although mommy has to help fit them in.

He’s becoming his own little person now, and I’m praying that I’ll have the wisdom in teaching Adrian to learn to do things the right way and to be able to communicate with others what he needs and wants well. Also that Jesus will help him to be obedient and patient.

Daddy taught Adrian who Jesus is in his quote book, so now he can point to Jesus on the different pages.

Today we decided that Daddy will have Polish story time with Adrian each night before sleepy time as a new addition to bedtime routine. It’s going to be so much fun since Daddy got Adrian got all kinds of fun and colorful story books in Polish in Poland.

10 months and 3 weeks – 13 September

Adrian is adept at putting the small lids onto bottles, since he’s seen us do it a lot. I let him play a little with the tap outside yesterday and today the first thing he did when outside was to run for the tap again. This time I let him hold the hose while it sprayed water and he was SO happy.

He’s been spending a lot of time with Jaime, his new friend and is learning a lot about sharing as he tries to grab anything that Jaime has. He even bit her dress the other day when she was pushing him. He’s got a little temper.

I’ve taken Adrian swimming in the big pool twice now on nice hot sunny mornings and Adrian is so excited to play in the water. He wears his fisherman’s sun hat and goes in and out of the water having a lot of fun. After 30-45 minutes doing that he has a nice long afternoon nap.

Our bed is very high off the ground, but Adrian is wise enough not to go off of it on his own. He has at times stopped at the edge and worked to let his feet down, I still has to help him though as the top of the bed is at his head level right now. He loves to climb though onto our bedside table from the bed. He also figured that if he climbs atop of daddy’s suitcase that is next to the beside table he can reach daddy’s sacred alarm clock which he’s not supposed to play with, but loves so much.

10 months, 3 weeks – 15th September

Adrian with his fishing game

Today he played his magnetic fishing game all on his own and patiently hovers his little rod over the magnetic fish till he “catches” something. Then he discovered he could put the fish and the rod in the crack between our bed and the wall and wanted to “put” all of them there, so I had to take them away. He’s also discovered that his magnetic fishing rod attaches itself onto the metal drawers in our room along with a few other things.

Today he met baby Crystal – a real little baby for the first time. He was smiling and happy to see her and stayed around for quite a while pointing to her with a smile on his face and touching her a few times. She was smiling at him.

He likes to put pen or crayon to paper and can make little scribbles and he's become adept at turning the pages of the plastic pages in his quote ring binder.

11 months – 20 September

FIRST WORD – Mama! He now says mamama when he sees mommy and wants to be with her. Daddy is eagerly trying to teach him how to say dada. Adrian has also learned to “fold” his hands when praying as the little boy does in his quote book.

Mommy made him his Family and Friends photo notebook which he likes very much. He especially likes to give a kiss to his "auntie" Jasmine on the last page.

At 11 months Adrian can walk from the dining room into the kitchen pretty easily and loves to toddle around in the living room. He caught a nasty cough a couple days ago, so these days are a little difficult as it hurts him when he coughs and it wakes him up many times throughout his naps and nights sleep. His little nose is also running a lot. Thankfully he’s only got a little temperature and no fever. I’m eating lots of garlic at every meal to help him get better.

Adrian loves dropping things down the crack behind the bed, both in mine and Arthur and Priya’s room. He also loves telephones and since he was 7 months old would hold the telephone up to his ear. Now Jaime and him sometimes fight over who’s going to “say hello” on the phone. Adrian loves to “dance” and he does this by waving one hand in the air whenever he hears music, he’s also enthusiastically clap. He can easily point out in books: Jesus, dogs, ducks, teddy bears, horse, fish and is learning many more with his new board flap book which he really likes.

11 ½ months – 7 October

Jaime (21 months) and Adrian watching the Leap Frog Letter Factory together

Apparently he’s now said “Dada” a couple times though mama hasn’t been around to hear it. He also says “all done”, “dis” and “dat” it seems. He’s a much better walker now and will toddle around the kitchen while mommy serves her self. He behaves better with daddy than with mommy. Daddy can sit at his computer while Adrian plays on his own for up to an hour, whereas when mommy is there, he wants to sit with her, pound on her computer and whines much more.

He was sick for two weeks with the cough flu that went around. He’s still got a cough but is not running fevers anymore, thank the Lord. During this time he hasn’t wanted to eat any solid food, so mommy’s praying he’ll want to again soon.

He loves to “feed” mama by putting whatever utensil he has into mommy’s cup or plate and then moving it to my mouth. He’s learning to obey more as he has been screaming when mommy takes him away from something dangerous that he wants to play with. He usually calms down quite quickly after a little verbal instruction.

Firsts: He fed himself with a spoon for the first time today! It was yogurt from a cup and we even got it on video.

He'll be 1 year old on the 20th of October!
